All those hours of keeping the Young Bowling Club's greens looking their best has paid off for apprentice greenkeeper Damien Miller when he was named Turf Graduate of the Year for the ACT region on Monday night.
Damien is now in the running for the national Sports Turf Association Graduate of the Year award which will see him travel to Melbourne in May for more interviews. Damien was nominated for the ACT award alongside three other apprentices and his win was announced at an awards dinner in Canberra.
"I'm still trying to come to terms with it all," he said yesterday morning. "My phone hasn't stopped ringing!" The 21-year-old has spent the last three years studying at the Canberra Institute of Technology where he graduated in Certificate III in Horticulture (turf) last November.
Damien is no stranger to the Young Bowling Club - he's represented the club and the area in bowls on several occasions.
His connection to the club soon landed him the greenkeepong apprenticeship, which involves tasks such as mowing, rolling the greens, mark out, fertilizing, spraying and tidying the grounds.
