I look after the irrigation at a few parks and sports fields and would like to reduce water usage but maintain the quality of the turf.I have been looking at fertigation systems which are easy o install and there is one called Ez-Flo which claims that there are up to 20% water savings to be had.Has anybody used fertigation to help reduce water usage.

End of Season 'Putting to bed'

Im over here playing cricket and obviously the season has come to an end. I have been helping with the ground all year and this week the president and I are filling in the low patches on the square and generally putting it to bed. My old man is a groundsman at home and i know when they do such things at the end of the year and the general maintenance, they mix in seed with loam and spread through the low patches and water. The setup over here is obviously different in terms of soil make up so wouldnt use loam and how we have done things has been a bit more basic anyway (pitches have still been great though). We are in Traralgon Victoria if anyone has any info on the area. Was out looking at the square today and its generally really cracked and very very dry with patchy grass coverage. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

need new clay

Hey there im attempting to look after our grass wicket at the kihikihi domain. i dont know the name of our clay so i dont know where to get more from. so i have sourced some different clay but its not knitting together the best. it also dries out a alot more. I have heard of patumahoe clay. but then im not sure how to get hold of it or how mush it costs. there may also be a different clay i could use Kihikihi is about 30mins south of hamilton. our wicket block is 13m x 24m. fully drained underneath with sand etc. we have a good heavy roller and digital irrigation system with 8 sprinkers. The wicket has been there 30+ years. but only reinstated the grass 4 years ago. Any advice would be awesome

Kikuyu in Cricket wicket

I am a volunteer helping with a couple of cricket wickets. At begining of season I noticed that we had some kikuyu growing the wicket area, which is mainly couch grass. What would be the best way to remove the kikuyu. I thought of handpainting with glyposphate, is there a chemical that I can use to get rid of the kikuyu.

Planting a new green

Gary, With all due respect this is an extremely broad question...for example is the current condition of your troublesome green due to soil type, water quality/application, environmental factors(i.e.shade ets)?what is your disease prevention/nutriton programme? budget? or perhaps even poor levels affecting drainage?Sometimes it doesn't what grass type you have you MUST get the BASICS right and expediture on this sort of investigation can be worthwhile and save you alot of pain when coverting your grass type due to "poor conditon".Santa Ana in my mind is the best overall couch for our condtions but in saying that there is no doubt Tift Dwarf bowling greens(if managed properly) are the beezneez. Scarifyings are used in the planting process and this is a sensitive process, but is still the best/cheapest way to convert(assuming you get scarifyings from a neighbouring club).Conversion cost can range depending on how serious you are about having a green that has every chance of being a "good one" i.e. $5000 - $15000 or even up to $30 000 if you have serious probs and need to excavate etc. I suggest that you become a member of the SABowling greenkeepers and touch base with a few boys to do as much research as possible. generally a green planted in the height of summer with an excellent strike rate could be in play in three months(provided all correct steps have been taken to ensure the survival of scarifyings).

Best job on the world

Hi guys been a while I thought website had changed to turf mate . Had a massive weekend at Camberwell had Vic spirit and SA 3 games 1456 runs 42 wickets 3 century's 6 fifths . Not kidding 2 of these girls were hitting as we'll as many of the premier players. The standard has improved heaps science we have been hosting. I'm coming up to the end of apprenticeship which ends on grand final weekend late march . I am desperate to find work ad stated previously willing to move and do whatever it takes to work in wickets at any level where others take pride and love what they do. I no by being a mature age apprentice ? Will be asked but am hard working reliable team player and love what we do so a plea to anyone who could throw me a lifeline. My record at Camberwell and and my references are top notch . I no it sounds stuck up but have responsibilities and need to put myself out there . Cheers Coops

Planting a new green

Hi all , brand new to this site but saw some interesting stuff on it. I am trying to gather as much info on replacing an existing salt water couch green in Kimba South Australia with whatever is the best grass available for our fairly harsh environment. Any info on type of grass, when and how to sow or sprigg or rollout grass, cost of doing any of the above and how much down time the club might expect. Any input would be appreciated as your currant green is giving us a lot of grief. Thanks in Advance Gary

Can anybody give me any tips on marking out a AFL oval. Is there any secrets to getting the perfect oval shape. Does the boundary line have to be a perfect oval and symmetrical on both sides? if so how do you mark a perfect oval?

Its my first post here and I need advise on Boom spray calibration.

Well I sprayed the oval. It had taken about 2.2 tanks. (about 750 litres) Not sure what happend there but it was only meant to take 1.9 tanks. (300L tank) I had a look at the turf and weeds after spraying. The leaves were not completely coverered as expected - just a few drops on a leaf per plant and some weeds looked as if there they were not covererd at all. How long does it take for you guys to notice plant wilt on weeds using monument? Maybe im being impatient, but its been 2 days and they look as healthy as ever!

The calculation is total spray output times 600 divided by effective spray width divided by actual ground speed I have been using this calculation for a long time and have never had any problems and have always had excellent results

Its my first post here and I need advise on Boom spray calibration.

Thanks Mick. The thing that throws me out is this.. I have been using this NSW calibration worksheet http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0007/375064/powell-boomspray-calibration.pdf And the 'Water application rate" calculation is mixed up - the written version says Total output (litres/min) x 600 / spray width TIMES ground speed. While the calculated version says Litres per minute x 600 / spray width DIVIDE by grounds speed. So that confused me. Can you or anyone one out there confirm for me how to calculate water application rate? Is it Litres/min multiply by 600 divide by spray width DIVIDE by ground speed?? Mick If its DIVIDE by ground speed then your 2.5km/hour works perfect!!! Fingers crossed. Thanks again.

Your water application rate is 175.86L per Ha, 246 L is the total amount of water that you will need to do your oval. You need to change to a different nozzle that delivers more water and or decrease your ground speed, if you slow down to 2.5 kmh with your current nozzles this will increase your water application rate to 406L per Ha. A bit slow but I am assuming your area is 14000m2 and is not that large of an area. Hope this helps
