Message Board - Bowls: Ground Pearl

Posted 18 Aug 2012 rhinobobcat

Recently i have been helping a local bowling club in eastern Sydney with their two greens, one of these is heavily infested with ground pearl. Anyone know of any methods to "control" or at least manage the damages and spread of the pest. Any information or links would be greatly appreciated.

keep it real banana peel

Daniel,

If they have come to the surface they are easily controlled with the likes of a Bifenthrin.

Once they head back down and start to build their little shell it becomes more difficult.

Thiamthoxam (Meridian) does a decent job when mixed with white oil. Other methods include Supracide with white oil and or Bifenthrin. Including a soil penetrant would help move the products into the zone required.

Please remember none of the above are registered for control of Ground Pearl although they do carry various turf registrations.

That combined with good management using a kelp product to stimulate root development etc will help you keep in front of them.

Hope that is of some help.
