Message Board - Natural Turf: Turf suppliers

What are the thoughts out there about turf suppliers mixing grass species in stead of supplying pure grass species (In NZ)...
-Tall fescue turf now has 20% fine fescue & 20% Rye grass through it!
-Fine Fescue has 20% Rye grass through it!
These mixes make maintenance extreamly hard as the Rye grass stands out really badly as its a much lighter grass.

Hi James,
Not sure who you are buying your seed through but if you ask for Tall Fescue you should get Tall Fescue not some mix you are not after, The mixes you are receiving are a companies ready made mix not what you are stipulating.
If the seed is coming with the other varieties in it as a contaminant then the seed is not certified.

Sorry Bruce I forgot to add rollout lawn turf suppliers. I have had no issues with grass seeds like you said I always buy certified seeds.

Hi James, I suggest you give the guy at ROLAWN (0800 765 296) a ring. They are up front about what is in the turf and the quality and service is good.
Are you sure the contaminant in the fine fescue is not Poa trivialis? If it is, it's quite easy to deal to.

Unfortunately they are up front & also mix their grass species.Their service & soil type they grow turf in is excellent, I just think its all about hurrying the turf along to recover some of their investment quicker which I can understand but it makes maintenance a nightmere!
