Message Board - Cricket: WACA Pitch

15 Jan 2012 by Shaun Devon

Most people in our industry that I have talked to about the WACA pre drinks incident say it’s a storm in a tea cup and shouldn’t even be news. I just don’t understand why the ground staff where even in that position in the first place?

Surely if you want to have a few drinks out in the middle you can wait to the last day of the match?? Doing it on the actual pitch before the match starts is just asking for trouble.

Not to mention it makes our trade/profession look like a bunch of yobbo’s. Its hard enough being taken seriously without this being our industries biggest news story in the last 12 months.

I don’t wish anyone at the WACA to get in trouble over the incident but I will be extremely interested to see what the repercussions from both ICC and Cricket Australia will be.

With Cam out in the middle with everyone im sure he was keeping a sharp eye on things. Still agree with you that it doesn't look the best even if nothing happened

its always hot in Australia

Im not surprised you didnt get more bites Shaun.

You will find it hard pressed for anyone in the turf industry to say anything bad about Cam and his team at the WACA. Very professional team he runs.

How do greenkeepers earn a living!!! ;-)

Completely disagree Rob!
For a Guy who prides himself on his professionalism I think It was an average thing to do. Fine, If work is to be done on the centre wicket then go for it. But don't let the entire office on the wicket drinking beers. Its a poor look!!
And Shaun has hit the nail on the head, " it makes our trade/profession look like a bunch of yobbo’s".

as groundman we can do what ever we want on and to the pitch before the game, and its nobody elses business what we get up to and if anything went wrong we would be responsible. the wicket is hard as a rock they'd struggle to damage it unless they spilt something on it and i'm sure they'd be careful about that.
i personally wouldn't be risking anything like that on my wickets

I don't really see the issue.

Maybe they should have been to the side of the wicket but in all honesty, we all know there is bugger damage they could do to it!

Once is a mistake, twice is stupidity!
