Raising PH
Having just had the same problem at Villa Park, I thought I might offer my two pennies worth. The pitch was tested and we found a reading of 4.5 from the samples taken. The grass at the time was mainly rye and not responding to anything we did(please read last editorial-archived). We used Microcal from Rigby Taylor in this case to raise the Ph, so far we have put on 1500kg's over an area of 8000 square yards in four applications of approx 350kg's each.
These applications have gone on over a six week period and I will be getting a further analysis done shortly to see how far we have raised the Ph. Rye grass will grow best in a Ph of 6-6.5. As Ph is measured logarithmically, each point is actually to the power of ten, so to raise the Ph from 4.5 to 6.5 means bringing up the level a few hundred times. Give me a ring if you need to source the lime. Also remember that lime is extremely dangerous to apply-so take adequate precautions.
