Did anyone read this??
http://www.pitchcare.com.au/magazine/synthetic-oval-launches-a-new-era-for-afl-and-cricket.html

What a bloody disgrace!
Not only for the fact that a full size oval has been turned into a bloody plastic oval more the fact the bloody Nationals are out broadcasting it!

What hope have we got when the poli's think plastic is good and needs to be celebrated?
Makes you wonder were its all going to end up. I quote -
"The Victorian Government provided $300,000 in funding for the synthetic oval project from the Synthetic Surfaces Program. This is in addition to the combined $320,000 AFL and Cricket Australia contribution, the $20,000 Cricket Victoria contribution and Wyndham City Council's $1.78 million contribution"

Why doesn’t the bloody government put that money into turf grass research or hire a fulltime bloody groundsman for 5 years? This is wrong on so many levels!

I agree

Cant get 10 dollars for turf research or for groundsmans wages, does seem a no brainer that a fulltime qualified turf manager would be a far better investment in the future than wacking in a synthetic field. 2.5 million would pay for a groundsman for a fair amout of years.
But it is always the way that the group that makes the loudest noise gets all the biscuits.

Merry Xmas to everyone and lets hope for a better January than 2011.

I'm disappointment to see this hasn’t created more of a stir. Our attitude seems to be rolling over and letting this happen without a protest.

Who is fighting in our corner when it comes to this? Why is the government so for putting in bloody synthetic it’s a disgrace!

You’re not wrong Joe seems we are happy to just roll over and just let it come take over our lively hood.

There will always be some place for synthetics we can't argue that fact but playing ball sports on it as far as I’m concerned is a disgrace.

its always hot in Australia

Be interesting to see how they repair the oval when some hoon gets his car onto it and does a bit of circle work...... Government is only too happy to hand out the cash for plastics... we have seen it in the bowls side over the past decade..... try and get some money for a new top to put in couch and there's nothing to give..... there has to be some way that all turf managers can attack this issue, there is a place for synthetics but they are not the solution that the pollies think.... then again they wouldn't know... they don't go to the source.... Dyson what do you guys do at the VGA?

I mean do you have like some long term action plan against the plastic?

None of our industries have been effected to the extent the bowls trade has so it would be interesting to hear if you have a strategic plan in place fighting back.

We are currently in the process of putting together a strategic plan for the coming years, not only on how synthetics affect us but how to improve our industry and the work we as greenkeepers do..... currently we try to run at least 2 seminars a year to provide as much info as possible for turfies out there.... the better educated we are as turfies the more chance we have of keeping synthetics at bay, the biggest hurdle is educating clubs to make the correct choice... their is a market for plastics in the bowls industry, it just is not the be all and end all answer some clubs get told...
