WACAWhile the rest of Australia's cricket stadiums expand, the WACA Ground is downsizing to accommodate residential apartments and commercial buildings.

But the bold plan is necessary for the ground's long-term survival, WA officials say. The dilapidated ground receives no government funding because it will not transform into a multi-sport facility, so the WACA will generate money for the refurbishment by selling off parts of the precinct to developers, who will erect four 20-storey residential and commercial towers, one 10-storey commercial block, and an eight-storey residential development.

That also means the ground's capacity goes from about 19,900 to 18,000.
