The substantial flooding which overwhelmed much of Queensland in January this year certainly put the Rain Bird Integrated Control System to the test.

In 2009, Water Equipment Technology (WET) of Queensland won the tender to irrigate the St Lucia Golf Links in Brisbane. They recommended the Rain Bird IC System and, upon winning the contract, became the first company to install the system anywhere in Australia.

In January this year, parts of the St Lucia Golf Links were inundated by flood water to a depth of several metres and it took some time to subside. As soon as it was clear to do so, the WET team went onto the course to test the irrigation. They found the Rain Bird IC System to be completely undamaged and working efficiently, exactly as it was intended to.

This is an outstanding testimony to the quality and durability of the components that make up the system and to the installers from WET who worked closely with Rain Bird Australia to get all the specifications just right. The Rain Bird IC System incorporates a small Integrated Control Module (ICM) with each rotor or valve which allows the course's Central Control Computer to talk directly to the rotors thereby bypassing all other previous control functions.

Not only does the system offer easy installation and cost efficiencies - including savings of up to 90% in copper wire alone - it also exceeds current industry standards for reliability, safety and performance. With most components located underground, there is far less chance of damage caused by vandals, bad weather or above-ground pests.

Certainly bad weather - some of the worst that Queensland has ever experienced - posed no problem to the Rain Bird IC System.

It comes as no surprise then that Ben Chapman, Water Equipment Technology of Queensland's Irrigation Designer, was presented with a Rain Bird Top Flight Award at the International Golf Show held in Orlando, Florida on the 9th and 10th of February, 2011.

It appears that the Rain Bird Integrated Control System is just as resilient as the Queenslanders who are still rising above the disastrous floods.
