Carved out of an old cotton farm, The Rawls Course was created to test the skills of the country’s best collegiate players while providing an enjoyable social venue for the university community. Renowned golf course architect Tom Doak designed the course, relying on his imagination to convert a flat cotton field into a world-class golf experience. Doak moved 1.3 million cubic yards of topsoil to create a challenging links style course defined by undulating greens, wide fairways, and deep bunkers. By design, the course mimics the eroded features and canyons of the West Texas Caprock region. The fairway contours and rugged bunkers emulate the natural erosion of the land worn down by wind and water, giving the course an appealing rustic look.

“The Rawls Course is an exciting addition to our portfolio and we look forward to working with the athletic department and the staff at Texas Tech University,” stated Hud Hinton, president and COO, Troon Golf. “We’re confident our management services will be a great complement to the facility’s superior design and unique character.”

The Rawls Course has helped position Texas Tech as a leader in NCAA championship golf. The course has hosted several Big 12 Conference events including the 2009 Big 12 Women’s Championship. The course also delivers ideal practice conditions for the highly-accomplished Texas Tech Red Raider golf teams. The Rawls Course gives the teams a competitive edge, providing players with exclusive practice holes, diverse putting surfaces, sheltered hitting bays and the latest video technology. A clubhouse and state-of-the-art facility are in the planning stages. The course is open to daily-fee play and options for annual memberships are also available.

“We are proud to have Troon Golf manage The Rawls Course at Texas Tech University,” said Gerald Myers, director of athletics. “Troon Golf is known throughout the golf world as the leading management company for premier golf courses. With Tom Doak’s design and Troon’s management expertise, The Rawls Course will provide Texas Tech alumni, students, faculty and staff, as well as the West Texas golf community a great experience”.

Headquartered in Scottsdale, Ariz., Troon Golf is the world’s largest golf management company, overseeing operations at properties located in 31 states and 26 countries.
