Forbes Shire Council has vowed to fight to save the local Golf Club from closing.
The nine councillors were notified by the Forbes Services Memorial Club’s General Manager and President that the club will be closing at the start of December citing rising costs as the main reason for the sudden closure. Forbes Shire Council Mayor Cr Phyllis Miller OAM says she is absolutely appalled at the short notice given to Forbes Shire Council and says along with all councillors she will fight to keep the club open.
‘The short notice by the Forbes Services Memorial Club has restricted Forbes Shire Council in even establishing a management committee,’ Mayor Miller said. ‘This would have identified practices and solutions to prevent Forbes from losing this important sporting and social facility.’
‘As a council we are happy to work with any organisation in establishing better practices to ensure their survival, but I believe the community is being short changed by the Forbes Services Memorial Club.’
The Forbes Golf Club has proved an important resource to the people of Forbes, not only to local golfers but to the Forbes Squash Club who also operate at the same location. The club has also been named as one of the best places in Country New South Wales to hold conferences, weddings and special occasions.
‘This is a vital part of our community, not only to our golfers; but to the whole population,’ Mayor Miller said.
‘Forbes Shire Council is willing to work with the Forbes Services Memorial Club to keep the club open but it will not be sucked into running a facility at the expense of local ratepayers to keep the Forbes Services Memorial Club reaping out rewards.
Forbes Shire Council is calling on the local community to attend a public meeting at 6pm on Wednesday at the Forbes Town Hall Concourse to ensure the Golf Club is kept open.
