Work on upgrading facilities at Rockhampton's Callaghan Park race track is expected to step up once the Winter Racing Carnival winds up at the end of this month.

Rockhampton hosts the Girl's Grammar Race Day this Saturday, before the Winter Carnival finishes with next week's Newmarket and Rockhampton Cup meetings. The Rockhampton Jockey Club's Bruce Slattery says from early next month, the upgraded training track will be used for racing while a new grass track is laid in time for summer.

"Then we'll race on the training track for six months while they're putting a whole new grass track down," he said. "Cambering the track to be the right shape for horses to gallop well on it and to get the best drainage. "They're putting all new drainage under it as well which will make the training track more accessible in wet weather."

Mr Slattery says full TAB coverage of next week's Rockhampton Cup is an exciting way to end the Winter Carnival. "This year, as part of promoting our track here Queensland Racing have approved that we have a full TAB meeting here," he said. "Where the Rockhampton races will be shown all over Australia and that's a first for the Rockhampton Cup.
