Work will begin within the coming year on the resurfacing of the Queen Elizabeth Oval.

At its meeting last night, the Greater Bendigo council decided to allocate a one-off federal grant of $800,000 towards the project. The grant requires the project to be finished by December next year and Mayor Rod Campbell believes that is an achievable target.

The entire project will cost about $2 million and the council is negotiating with the Victorian Government to help make up the shortfall. Councillor Campbell says the project is long overdue.

"The ground has been identified as being well overdue for refurbishment and in fact it stalled because of the drought and the water situation and so we're now getting back on track ... but it's a well known fact that regardless of who plays on that oval the surface has been identified as not up to scratch," he said.
