The Australian state of Victoria, especially the area in and around Melbourne, is famous for its sand belt – the long stretch of excellent soil that has given the golf world such institutions as Royal Melbourne and Victoria Golf Club, home of Geoff Ogilvy and Peter Thomsen, among others.

Now another Australian golf institution will be drawing his line(s) in the sand.

Greg Norman will design 27 holes for Eastern Golf Club in Victoria’s Yarra Valley, just outside Melbourne. The club goes back 110 years and can trace its roots all the way to 1886.

But the three new nines will be a big step in the club’s modern history, especially environmentally. Not only will the new courses offer 360-degree views of the nearby mountains and the Yarra River, but it will also be designed by a trustee of the Environmental Institute for Golf – that’s Norman; the EIC has been a favorite among his many projects.

Both designer and owner promise a course that follows natural contours. Eastern is forthright in its ambition to be one of the leading courses in Australia.
