Night games will not be played at Thebarton Oval this year, after the SA Amateur Football League missed out on vital funding for the $325,000 project. SAAFL CEO Mark Shadiac

Woodville West Torrens had scheduled two games under lights at the oval, and the SAAFL had planned to host weekly twilight games during the football season, bringing extra supporters and revenue to the competition. But SAAFL CEO Mark Shadiac last week said the project had been forced onto the back burner after the league was unsuccessful with a State Government funding bid for $162,625. “In the absence of the State Government grant, we’re virtually left out in the cold,” he said.

The league also applied for funding from the AFL and West Torrens Council, but council support had relied on the success of both other grant bids.

A spokeswoman for Recreation, Sport and Racing Minister Michael Wright said other facilities, which had no floodlighting and were catering for multiple sports, were placed at a higher priority in the latest funding round of the Community Recreation and Sports Facilities Program.
