Port Lincoln mayor Peter Davis says the council will draw a financial line in the sand over future funding for an upgrade of the city's Centenary Oval.

The project is back to the drawing board after the council committed $300,000 to the project but a submitted plan attracted building quotes of more than $900,000. Mr Davis says those working on the project need to be sent a message that the council's commitment will not allow for cost blow-outs. "At the end of the day the really big issue is that council has drawn a line above which it will not spend and that line is $300,000," he said.

"It does seem the design of it went overboard. "Better to find out now before we started building rather than building a facility which would be probably by the time it was finished $1 million worth and that the council will not be funding."
