Eastern Golf ClubIndependent experts are assessing options for the future of Doncaster's Eastern Golf Club.

The consultants were called in by the club as part of a wide-ranging review into its long-term financial viability. The club intends to put the results of the consultants' work to its members in June. In a statement, club general manager Benjamin Telley revealed members hadEastern Golf Club been asked for views at three information sessions and through a survey. "The members have responded overwhelmingly that they understand that major change is required and why," Mr Telley said.

"While the options have been shortlisted for members, it is too early to draw any conclusions as the information is currently being independently evaluated. "When members are asked to decide on the long-term future of the club, they will be able to do so with confidence as the information as compiled and presented to them will have been reviewed by independent consultants."

Eastern Golf Club Question marks have hung over the club's future since November 2006, when it emerged the club's board planned to put the course on the market and buy Rowville course Kingston Links. This was rejected by members, who then dumped the board at an extraordinary general meeting the following February.

A merger with Yarra Valley Country Club subsequently fell through, and ideas such as becoming a public course, developing part of the property or putting in poker machines have since been explored.

The history of The Eastern Golf Club dates back to 1896 when the Surrey Hills Golf Club was formed at Mont Albert. This Club was disbanded in 1914 at the outbreak of the war and at about this time a small group of friends leased the property "Tullamore" (pictured right) in Doncaster and decided to form The Eastern Golf Club. An 18 hole course was laid out amid the surrounding orchard by the leading golf architect of the day,Eastern Golf Club Sam Berriman. In 1924 the Committee took over the assets of the Box Hill Golf Club and re-established it at Tullamore under the name of The Eastern Golf Club. Mr. Stanley Bruce, the Prime Minister of the day, officially opened the Club on the 10th June 1924.

In 1941 the then Eastern Golf Club moved to a new course at East Oakleigh, having purchased land from the Melbourne Hunt Club, and formed Huntingdale Golf Club.

The Eastern Golf Club was reformed in 1944 at its present site and the "Tullamore" homestead remains the centrepiece of the Clubhouse.

The course is a well maintained and challenging 18 hole par 71 setamongst long established native trees, and with an abundance of bird life adding to its charm and character the course provides an excellent and enjoyable test for all golfers.
