Mackay stadium will benefit from almost $1m in additional funding if Labor is re-elected next Saturday.
The Daily Mercury can exclusively announce $865,000 has been promised to complete stages 2 and 3 of the project. Tim Mulherin, member for Mackay, said the funding would go towards outer seating at both ends of the park.
Pathways, shade areas, disability rails, storage sheds, irrigation equipment and a car park have been earmarked. In making the announcement, Mr Mulherin called on the LNP to match the pledge. "So far the LNP have failed to say whether they will meet our $15m commitment to the Mackay Showgrounds or our $2m to upgrading Mackay City Centre," he said.
Jan Jarratt, member for Whitsunday, said the stadium had drawn events we had never seen before. "This $865,000 in upgrades will see the Mackay region attracting even more events," she said. "It will increase the stadium capacity by 1900 spectators to 13,900 seats."
Great news for Mackay, but with the electorate sceptical of election promises, we asked where the money would come from.
