Keith Johns knows the fairways and greens of the Maryborough Golf Club like the back of his hand. Not through years of playing the course, because you see he hasn't played a single round there.
Johns doesn't play the game but that hasn't prevented him for giving the club his best shot in his role as a greenkeeper there for the past 44 years. The 66-year-old retired yesterday and he has no intention of taking up the game he once played as a youngster after school on a nine-hole course while growing in New South Wales.
He's going to put his hands to use doing woodturning rather than teeing up a little white ball for 18 holes.
But it's not only the thought of putting his lathe to use that excites Johns - just thinking about being able to sleep in rather than getting up before 5am each working day is rather appealing.
Not surprisingly, Johns said not getting up for work is something that is going to take a bit of getting used to.
While Johns won't be seen mowing a green again, his work will always be seen at the club. He planted most of the trees on the course while he and his staff and a team of volunteers, known as “Dads Army”, did the reconstruction of the 18 new greens.
