Money and fame are not guaranteed in a career as a greenkeeper but the best practitioners are indispensable to golfers.

Apprentice Dane Lafou, 19, is hosted by WPC Group at the City of Canada Bay and works on the Massey Park Golf CourseWhen some of the world's best players arrive for the Australian Open and Presidents Cup, they rely on teams of greenkeepers to maintain courses in championship condition. Brett Russell from the Australian Golf Course Superintendents' Association said the job of a greenkeeper involved tough physical work but provided immense satisfaction.

There was even the potential perk of getting a photo and an autograph with the winner at the end, he added. ``A lot of people don't realise what goes into preparing a championship golf course,'' Mr Russell said. ``It's a skilled profession. It's not a matter of cutting grass and chucking some turf down.''

Apprentice Dane Lafou, 19, is hosted by WPC Group at the City of Canada Bay and works on the Massey Park Golf Course. Mr Lafou, who lives in Seven Hills, said he decided to do his apprenticeship because he had a keen interest in greenkeeping and horticulture and liked working outdoors.

``I like the technical aspect of greenkeeping, especially working with all the tools and machinery,'' he said.

TOP TRAINING

* A horticulture apprenticeship can set a person up for a career in general urban, residential, parks, recreation or golf course horticulture.
* It will establish a solid grounding to diversify into sports turf, tree care, landscaping or grounds maintenance.
