Cowra Golf Club secretary manager Ray Watmore & course superintendent Toby Lowe are thankful the course will receive donated water in time for the 4-day Easter Classic extravaganza beginning Friday. What does a golf club do when they are forced to go without water for such a long time?

They have it donated to them!

With Cowra Golf Club’s prestigious Easter Classic set to tee off on Friday, the club has been forced to take extreme measures to combat the big dry.
Official records show not one millimetre of rain has fallen in Cowra during March, leaving the dry and dusty course in urgent need of watering.

So the committee, after no luck brokering a deal with Cowra Shire Council, received five megalitres from a private source, a company called Simplot.Cowra Golf Club

The donation will combine with another five megalitres purchased from a private source to help them battle through the busy March-April period which will also feature the NSW Country two man ambrose championships.

“We thank them (Simplot) very much for the water which will help us get through Easter,” Cowra Golf Club secretary manager Ray Watmore said.

Simplot - Buyers Guide “The golf club has already bought five megalitres and we have another major tournament in April. We’ll have close to 400 players over the four days and around 80 per cent will be visitors for the Easter Classic.”

Cowra Golf Club’s course superintendent Toby Lowe said the water will go a long way to softening the constant tread of players down the fairways. “This water will really help a lot and put it in a shape as good as it can be,” he said. The greens and tees are in magnificent condition across the entire layout, but it is the fairways and surrounding regions which have caused the most concern. Watmore said indications from further afield suggested the tournament would have been even bigger if not for the harsh climate.

“There’ll be quality players from Sydney, Canberra, Goulburn, Young and surrounding areas,” he said. “We’ve had plenty of visitors that come to town, they look at the parks and gardens so lush and green, and then look at the other side and wonder why it’s so dry and barren. We’ve had a couple of enquiries and they said we would have had more entries if the course wasn’t so dry.”
