City Oval will undergo more than $350,000 worth of upgrades, with the city's lawn bowlers and netballers being the big winners in the announcement.

Redan Football Netball Club will finally be united at Mars City Oval by the end of the year with a new $139,000 netball court to be built. Currently the Linlec Electrical Lions are the only football netball club in the region that is divided.

State Minister for Sport, Recreation and Youth Affairs James Merlino said the club would be united for the first time in its history. "The resident footy team at Redan Football Netball Club has achieved outstanding results in the last eight years, bringing home five senior premierships," he said.

The state government also contributed $60,000 to upgrades at the City Oval Bowling Club, while Ballarat City Council again contributed $68,000 in addition to $86,000 supplied by the City Oval Bowling Club.

The money, totalling $214,000, will provide a new synthetic surface at the bowling club in place of one of the three natural grass surfaces currently at the club. The new surface can be used all year round.

Mr Merlino said the surface would save about 500,000 kilolitres of water each year.

Ballarat Mayor Judy Verlin said it was a long haul for the clubs, but the funding announcement cemented City Oval's reputation as a "jewel" in the city. The work at City Oval is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
