Work on the championship golf course and centrepiece of Bingara Gorge’s residential community at Wilton started earlier this month.

Wollondilly Mayor Col Mitchell said he inspected the site two weeks ago and was pleased to see work was under way. “It was good to see them making a move on it,” he said of the development which had its first sod turned in 2006.

Bingara Gorge project director Paul Gerlach said the $40 million golf course, clubhouse and parklands would take between two and three years to complete. The course layout, which takes in scenic gorges and bushland, originally was designed by South African golfer Ernie Els.

Former Australian champion Graham Marsh, now a world-renowned course designer with 50 courses under his belt and another 20 under development, will deliver the final design. Mr Gerlach said Mr Marsh brought to the project an intimate knowledge of the Australian landscape and environment. “We consider ourselves very fortunate to have the input of two of the biggest names in golf course design,” he said.

Mr Marsh said he looked forward to bringing the Bingara Gorge vision to reality. “The location for this course rivals many of the best in the world,” he said. “We’ve got a lot to work with here - a natural topography that is perfectly suited to golf and some truly memorable views taking in the ravines and gorges.”

The initial construction work will focus on stormwater and sediment control, services and earthworks for lakes and water storage basins, which lay the foundation for the fairways. Mr Gerlach said the golf course would offer benefits beyond the boundaries of Bingara Gorge, a Delfin Lend Lease masterplanned community for 3500 residents.
