Magazine: Queen Elizabeth Oval Pitch Vandalised

Vandals have damaged the fragile Queen Elizabeth Oval pitch, prompting concerns that Bendigo's show-piece ground will not be ready to host cricket next week as planned.
Curator Jack Connelly has found the pitch damaged after two weekends by people tramping or even riding on the couch grass surface. "It's a real mess," Mr Connelly said. "I just want to make people aware of the vandalism, because it's ratepayers' money going into the pitch.
"The wicket has been saturated, which you have to do to get the new couch to grow. "But they've run and ridden their bikes all over it, destroying the young grass. "We'll virtually have to start again."
Mr Connelly said cricket was expected to be played on the QEO next week as part of round three of the Bendigo District Cricket Association. "There's cord all around the wicket but that doesn't stop them," he said.
Anyone with information on the incidents is urged to call 5443 6171.
