Magazine: Seasonal Update

SEASONAL UPDATE
Spring has arrived quickly this year, with weather forecasts indicating a few frosts likely to occur through to mid November. Further forecasts released by the Bureau of Meteorology indicate higher than average spring temperatures.
With spring, its time to carry out tissue analysis. I am travelling frequently so we will be in contact for an appointment for sample collection.
We will be updating current Nutrient Management Plan’s. Tissue testing will tell us how plants went into dormancy and what they have used from storage over winter. We can top up now, and prepare next autumn’s pre-dormancy nutrition program. Obviously, we will get better results on couch than bent, for nutrition, and I am keen to research the elements that will assist winter disease control.
SOIL TEMPERATURE
Start monitoring soil temperature’s, in weed hot spots. Track this information to get accurate timing for weed control measures. Also measure couch areas like tees and fairways. Above 12˚C and some top up nutrient applications can be made.
POA ANNUA
Soil temp and Growing Degree Days together will assist in modelling ‘Poa Annua’ growth stages. The intent being to conduct control at the most appropriate and efficient timing in the life cycle for best results.
GROWING DEGREE DAYS
GDD are accumulating. I know it can be a chore to continue to collect, so include it with daily IPM scouting and you will realise its value with improved timing of cultural and management practices.
NUTRITION
Previous recommendations and analysis can be used to start the season. Check your Blue Sheets for relevant levels and the Targets. Of note presently is Iron and Phosphorous. Most of my recent recommendations have included Libfer Iron and Ammonium Poly Phosphate. Inexpensive, persistent and great results.
POTASSIUM (K)
Potassium prices have increased considerably, shop around now for this season’s stock. Talk to suppliers about their stock levels and how long they can maintain prices for you.
Please call me directly if I can be of assistance.
Very best regards,
