Mt Waverley Bowling Club’s new synthetic surface has replaced ugly ripples for smooth rolling.
The Alvie Rd club unveiled its new $150,000 surface on September 13, 10 months after torrential rain and floods damaged the two grass areas and destroyed its prized synthetic court.
Club chief executive John Bridgland said a synthetic green was an essential alternative to the grass greens re-opened in January which close for maintenance throughout winter.
“With a synthetic court you can play all year round,” Mr Bridgland said.
“Unfortunately this year our members arranged to play at other clubs while the new green was brought in.”
He said the new and upgraded surface made from polypropylene and known as Dales Needle Punched Carpet was considered the best available and the closest alternative to the more natural playing surface.
Mr Bridgland said the green reopening had been like a rebirth for the club.
Club officials believe the damage caused by the December 20 storms was the result of blocked drains under the greens, which left water levels at 50cm.
