Port Melbourne’s North Port Oval is getting a much needed kick of support. The oval, home to Port Melbourne Football Club, is undergoing a $4.7 million redevelopment.
A State Government grant of $1 million got the ball rolling. Port Phillip Council will chip in $1.7 million and Football Victoria $500,000. The balance will be paid by the club. Deputy Mayor and Sandridge Ward councillor Janet Bolitho said the makeover couldn’t come soon enough.
“All the facilities at North Port Oval are worn out,” she said. “The refurbishment will not only bring the grandstand, clubrooms, umpiring facilities, change rooms and offices into the new millennium but open up the sporting life to the broader community.”
Meanwhile, the council has announced it will demolish Elwood Park’s sport pavilion and build another in its place.
Mayor Janet Cribbes said the $2 million building was desperately needed, with the number of sporting club members based at Elwood Park expected to swell.
