Magazine: United Push for Stadium

By Editor in Football on 23rd Aug 2008 6:00

Adelaide United chairman Dario Fontanarosa says the club is reviving negotiations with the state government over a proposed 45,000 all-seater inner-city stadium.

Speaking at Adelaide's new A-League season corporate launch at the National Wine Centre yesterday, Fontanarosa said modern facilities were vital to the club's future. A new stadium would also hand the state bargaining power in attracting Socceroos' World Cup and Asian Cup qualifying matches.

Adelaide now owns the rights to all parts of the soccer community with an A-League side, a W-League women's team and a youth set-up. The passionate chairman revealed the club wanted to house all of its new squads under the one roof, instead of using different facilities for each of its teams.

"We're continually talking to the state government," Fontanarosa said. "If we were to get the land, I'd be prepared to start the construction tomorrow. "We need facilities all at one venue.

"At the moment, staff are busier packing vans as we continually move to different training venues rather than concentrating on the football. "We'd need at least three training pitches, a main pitch, medical rooms, a gymnasium plus other necessities."

While Adelaide's A-League and youth league sides play all of their matches at Hindmarsh Stadium - barring January's fixture against Sydney FC - its women's squad still hasn't settled on a home base for W-League matches.
