Northland council leaders say a new stadium planned for Whangarei will go ahead, despite Northland's rugby demotion.
The facility was a prerequisite for Northland to stay in the premier division, but the regional council says it is still needed despite the relegation.The New Zealand Rugby Union has told Northland and Tasman they are about to be excluded from premier division rugby.
It had been considering which of four provincial teams to drop from the Air New Zealand Cup competition as it moves to restructure the professional game. Northland ratepayers have already been levied for a $16 million stadium at Okara Park.
Regional council chair Mark Farnsworth says the old stadium is at the end of its economic life. Whangarei mayor Stan Semenoff says the region badly needs a quality venue for multi-sports and other events.
More than a dozen companies have put their hands up to build a $16 million stadium at Whangarei's Okara Park. By next week the main funders - the regional council and Whangarei District Council - would whittle the list down to four of five contenders.
