Magazine: Princes Park Development Underway

By Editor in A.F.L on 7th Aug 2008 6:00

Earth-moving equipment began demolishing the Heatley and Harris Stands at Princes Park today to make way for a redevelopment that will transform the home of the Carlton Football Club, thanks to a $4.3 million Brumby Government contribution

Sport and Recreation Minister James Merlino, who visited Princes Park today joined by interim Carlton President Stephen Kernahan and City of MelbournePrinces Park Lord Mayor John So, said the works would clear the site for the future development.  “The Brumby Government understands that supporting grassroots and elite sport is one of the keys to building stronger and more liveable communities across the state,” Mr Merlino said.

“That is why we’re investing $4.3 million for a new building featuring a new gym, aquatic rehabilitation facilities and offices for players and administrators.

“There will also be fitness studios and rehabilitation suites, a function and meeting rooms, cafe and a 70-seat theatrette and aquatic facilities for local people to use and enjoy.”

The Brumby Government funding is part of the Victorian AFL Club Facilities Funding Program, with contributions also made by the AFL, the City of Melbourne and the Carlton Football Club. Mr Merlino said the Princes Park redevelopment would open up the stadium to the local area and provide greater access to facilities.

“The funding is part of a Brumby Government program to improve suburban football grounds into multi-purpose venues suitable for a range of community activities,” he said.

Interim Carlton President Stephen Kernahan said it was an exciting project for the football club and he acknowledged the support provided by the Victorian Government, City of Melbourne and the AFL in making it a reality.

“There is sure to be a touch of sadness for some Carlton people with the removal of these stands that have been an important part of the club's history, however this is about the future,” Mr Kernahan said.

“The elite training facilities will be of enormous benefit to our exciting young playing list and coaching staff. This new facility will play a vital role in the development of our players and will support the programs we have in place to achieve our objective of long term sustained success for the Carlton Football Club."

The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2009.
