Sale racecourse in Victoria is undergoing a significant facilities upgrade thanks to a $514,000 Brumby Government funding boost, Deputy Premier and Minister for Racing Rob Hulls said today.
Mr Hulls said Sale Turf Club had received the funding for four separate projects that would drought-proof and improve amenities at the r

acecourse.
“Sale Turf Club has built a solid reputation on the provincial racing circuit in Victoria and by funding these projects through the Racing Industry Development Program (RIDP) the Brumby Government has recognised this club’s importance to regional racing,” Mr Hulls said.
“Country racing is without doubt a vital part of the Victorian racing industry – and the Brumby Government is committed to ensuring its continued success.”
Projects funded through RIDP include:
• Construction of an irrigation dam and pump station ($160,000);
• Construction of new horse stalls ($176,000);
• Track lighting upgrade ($137,000); and
• Float carpark upgrade ($41,000).

Mr Hulls said one of the most critical projects being undertaken at Sale was the construction of a ten megalitre irrigation storage dam and pump station.
“Like much of Victoria, Gippsland has been hard hit by drought and this project means Sale racecourse will be able to accumulate and store ground water for its own use once it is completed,” Mr Hulls said.
The Sale Turf Club, which provides training facilities for 45 trainers in the area, will also benefit from a track lighting upgrade funded through a $2.1 million RIDP allocation specifically for thoroughbred training facilities shared between 12 regional Victorian racecourses.
Mr Hulls said a project to upgrade the racecourse’s horse stalls was completed in May, providing 18 new horse stripping stalls, a horse urinal box and a new vets swabbing facility.
The float carpark upgrade, which was funded through a $510,000 RIDP allocation shared by 20 regional racecourses for occupational health and safety projects, was also completed in May.
“Sale has a rich history dating from 1842 with the first recorded race between horses of two of the district pioneers,” Mr Hulls said.
“The professionalism of the Sale Turf Club and the quality fields this racecourse attracts is borne out by the increase in race meetings from 18 to 20 in the 2008/2009 racing season.”
RIDP provides country racecourses with new and upgraded buildings and water saving measures, and promotes the growth of rural and regional racing. As part of its commitment to country racing, the Brumby Government has committed $20.6 million in 2006/07 and 2007/08 to support major capital improvements through the RIDP.
