Magazine: Mapleham Golf Course Moves Ahead

By Parkland Press in Golf on 24th Aug 2008 6:05

The huge Pegasus developmentExcellent progress has been made in the construction of Mapleham Golf Course, a key part of the huge Pegasus development north of Christchurch. Adjacent to Pegasus and only a few kilometres from the beach, Mapleham offers convenient access to the many facilities and recreational opportunites available in Pegasus Bay.

Contractor Adam Jones of Grasslands Ltd reports that 9 holes have been built with a further 3 scheduled later in 2008. Construction is expected to be completed by February 2009.

Adam is installing the latest Toro Sitepro GDC decoder system at Mapleham. A total of 1,120 valve-in-head Toro 835S and 734 sprinklers are being installed. Every sprinkler is individually controlled for maximum flexibility and Mapleham Golf Courseefficient water use.

The central feature of the Mapleham development is an 18-hole championship-length golf course, master-planned by Francis Whitaker of Mason & Wales, and designed by leading landscape architects, Boffa Miskell, in collaboration with Greg Turner Golf. The course is a par 72, championship length course, playing approximately 6300m from the championship tees, to 5000m from the forward tees.

The golf course will be sculpted along the lines of traditional inland courses, and has been carefully designed to preserve the area’s existing topography. Enriched by mature trees, swathes of native grasses, wetland areas,Mapleham Golf Course waterways and lakes, the course will sit comfortably in its pastoral environment.

Mapleham Golf Course Update.
Great progress has been made with earthworks and grassing this month and Mapleham is really starting to look like a golf course. A great grass strike has been achieved on holes 3, 4, 5, and 9 as can be seen in the photos below taken in May 2008. Holes 1, 2, 6 and 8 have now also been seeded. Irrigation and drainage works will continue during winter in preparation for seeding and completing further holes in spring. Mapleham lots in stages 1 & 2 now have titles issued, fences have been completed and tree planting is continuing.
