There will be money in next week's South Australian Budget to build a second turf track at Morphettville racecourse in Adelaide.
Adelaide's other racecourses at Cheltenham and Victoria Park are going.
There will be $5 million for the Morphettville project and another $6 million towards work at Gawler racecourse. SA Racing Minister Michael Wright says a second turf track is needed for Morphettville to make sure the thoroughbred racing industry remains viable.
"The dilemma of course with Victoria Park really became an issue when the Adelaide City Council changed its mind about the grandstand, the SAJC (SA Jockey Club), following that decision, decided that it wouldn't continue racing at Victoria Park so really that has been the catalyst for what is occurring here," he said.
