Magazine: Malone Park Trashed

A hoon left a trail of skid marks and smashed glass on the oval and courts at Marong Football and Netball Club, police said yesterday.
Senior Constable Gary Boucher said someone drove onto Malone Park and caused extensive damage after they performed burnouts and doughnuts on two-thirds of the oval. Two netball courts were also covered with skid marks and smashed bottles.
Sen-Constable Boucher said the club spent the end of last week fixing and cleaning the damage so the facilities could be used at the weekend. Club president Colleen Rogers said the oval was ripped up.
‘‘We were absolutely gutted,’’ she said. ’‘We have spent the past five months and a massive amount of volunteer time and money to get the ground into a condition that we can play football on. ‘‘Then to get there on Thursday, before our first home game, and to see it all ripped up was distressing.’’
Concerned the oval would be unusable at the weekend, the club spent Friday repairing the damage. ‘‘We were shocked and just really angry,’’ Ms Rogers said. ‘‘How could somebody do this? It was a disappointment after all the effort gone into it.’’
Anyone who may have seen a utility being driven erratically in the area on Wednesday night is urged to contact police on 5448 1300 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
