Magazine: What’s Up? Newtown Park #2

The Mexteds crew have begun work on the
upgrade of Newtown Park #2 which has been
selected as the training ground for the Wellington
Phoenix A-League soccer team.
When the soccer franchise came to Wellington earlier this year, it was on the proviso that all the games would be played at the Westpac Stadium.
But then the search began for a suitable training ground.
Eventually Newtown Park #2 was chosen and
it is now being upgraded by the Wellington City Council, converting it from a soil field to a sand carpet field.
Trevor Jackson, WCC’s team leader of sportsfields,
says the field will be intensively used and the
turfneeds to be able to withstand that amount of use.
“That’s why we came up with the sand carpet and
got Mexteds involved.”
“Mexteds have the machinery to do the job and the
expertise. They always do the job within our timeframes.
They also take great care and pay attention
to detail that we require as well.”
The contract includes extending the field, making
it wider.
“We are sand-slitting the existing field, then using
the trenchings to extend the width of the field,”
explains Paul Pinfold. “We have also installed new
irrigation pipe using the Vibraplow, prior to installing
further subsoil drains and sandslitting the extended
area.”
