Magazine: Perth Want New Stadium MCG Size

By Editor in Football on 30th Dec 2007 17:00

new perth stadium.jpg The Location for Perth's new multi-purpose stadium hasn't been decided yet, so there certainly aren't any plans drawn up, but Fremantle coach Mark Harvey has started the debate on what size the ground should be.

The location will either be on the river in East Perth or next door to Subiaco on Kitchener Park, and the construction start date is at least a couple of years away, but Harvey has already indicated his preference for the shape of the ground. He wants it to resemble the home of football.

The MCG dimensions are 160m x 141m while Subiaco, which has given WA teams such a huge home-ground advantage, is longer and much narrower – 175m x 122m. Harvey wants the new ground to be MCG-shaped, as that is where the Grand Final is played.

"It's great that we now have got direction and understand where the game in West Australia is going to go to, for both clubs and for football in general. To have a 60,000 seat stadium will be absolutely sensational for our game – I just hope I'm around in seven years to see it," he said with a laugh.

"You know, it doesn't worry me as the coach, but I'd probably like it to be the same dimensions as the MCG, so the players get the real feel for the Melbourne-type games, and we've got a good record [at the MCG]."

Fremantle has won seven of its last 10 matches at the MCG.
