A great crowd of 60 bowlers from all three bowling clubs were present to witness the re-opening of the grass green at Kingscote Bowling Club on Australia Day.
Last used in 2004, it resembled a back paddock on a dairy farm. Months of hard but enthusiastic work from a good number of volunteers and under the supervision of John Berden, guided by overseer green keeper from the mainland, Brad Porter the back paddock slowly took shape to what it is today.
Speeches at the opening were Daryl Hammatt, Deputy Councillor of Region 7;Terry Bennett, President of the Kangaroo Island Bowling Association Ann Arnold on behalf of Jackie Kelly, President of the Kangaroo Island Ladies Bowling Association Helen Barrett, President of the Ladies Kingscote Bowling Club, Bevan Patterson President of the Kingscote Bowling Club.
Bevan gave a brief history of the greens checkered past and thanked John Berden for his drive and organisation which without, the end result would not be so great. Bevan then asked John to speak and after, put down the first bowl.
After a social game of bowls was enjoyed by all players a delicious dinner was served by Leonie Bell and her helpers. A presentation was made to the winning team of the social game: Alan Childs, Bevan Patterson, Margaret Edwards and Mary Barker. Rita Lobsey, a life member of Kingscote Bowling Club made a short speech and unveiled a commemorative plaque in the clubrooms.
The final word on the new green – FANTASTIC.
