Magazine: Peter Thomson Interview - British Open Wins

By Helen Perrett in General News on 5th Aug 2009 6:15

Interviewer: Bernie McGuire, R & A Media team
Peter Thomson
Qn: Can you remember what it was like when you won three in a row in 1956 at Royal Liverpool?

Ans: For me, the win was unexpected because I went into that week not very confident. Hoylake is a course that is not easy to figure out. I teed-off with very little hope of winning but in the end it seemed everyone else was in the same predicament

Qn: Are you in good health, Peter.

Ans: Perfect health.

Qn: Have you ever played Turnberry?

Ans: Yes. I played a British Match-Play Championship there but was beaten by Christy O'Connor in the semi-finals and I played an ALCAN event there another year where the wind blew so hard they had to call the day off. I also played in the 1977 championship that Tom Watson won.

Qn: Was there much hype when you went to Royal Liverpool in 1956 looking to win three Opens in a row?

Ans: There wasn't much hype about anything in those days. The event was conducted by Brigadier Brickman, who was Secretary of the R & A. But really it was quite a low key affair.

Qn: When you did achieve the feat was that big news?

Ans: It was big for me seeing I had played low key all week. I was trying to win every year and in 1956 I did manage to win three in succession and I was very pleased with myself in the end.

Qn: I believe you are staring at another milestone shortly - 80th birthday.

Ans: Yes, in August.
