Magazine: Hoons hit Loch Sport Golf Course

By Editor in Golf on 28th Jun 2009 12:00

Hoons who broke into the Loch Sport Golf Course recently caused substantial damage, tearing up the fairways and killing two kangaroos.

The Golf Club was recently selected to hold the State Sandgreens Championships in 2012. However club secretary Ken Leach said it had a "serious problem'' with hoon drivers breaking in to the course and vandalising it.

"Unfortunately we have a serious problem with hoons tearing up and down our fairways and destroying grassed areas and killing kangaroos,'' Mr Leach said.

"We need the course to be in first rate condition when the (Sandgreens Championships) take place and despite contacts with several regional government departments, no solution has been offered to deal with this problem.''

Mr Leach said during the Queen's birthday long weekend a person or persons drove a four-wheel-drive through a chain barrier and onto the Loch Sport golf course. He said the tyre marks the vehicle left indicated "it was deliberately targeting kangaroos''. "The vehicle ran down at least two young female kangaroos and left them to die,'' he said.

"There's no doubt they are specifically trying to kill the kangaroos - you can tell by the tyre marks that they've done wheelies to try and catch them.

"It only seems to happen on long weekends and holidays, so it's very possible it's the same people.'' According to Mr Leach, the construction of a substantial fence would be enough to stop the hoons breaking in to the golf course.

Sale police are currently investigating the incident, anyone with information is urged to phone the police on 5143 5000.
