Magazine: Beach's safety at risk after G.C Dumps Waste

By Editor in Golf on 22nd Jun 2009 6:00

Strahan residents fear contamination of the West Coast's only safe swimming beach after the dumping of tonnes of waste material at the local golf club.

Officers supporting the Environment Protection Authority are investigating what EPA director Warren Jones called "a large quantity of waste material". Police have also been involved.

The material includes rope nets, pipe and plastic structures. "There would be tonnes," local Mayor Darryl Gerrity said. He said locals were worried by the dumping and feared potential fish waste material may get into a nearby creek which led to West Strahan Beach.

"The Environment Department is testing nets for residue and contaminants. "It was brought to council's attention by a substantial number of residents worried about an environmental issue ..."

The EPA would not comment further because an investigation was under way.
