Magazine: Subiaco is the Worst Venue in AFL

The Chief Executive of the Australian Football League (AFL), Andrew Demetriou, has reignited the sports stadium debate in Perth, labelling Subiaco Oval the worst venue in the league.
The WA Football Commission has set up a working group with the West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers to push for a redevelopment of Subiaco Oval. The State Government has shelved plans for a new multi-purpose stadium in Perth because of the global economic downturn.
But Mr Demetriou says Subiaco is not big enough and needs to be upgraded. "Everybody acknowledges that the Subiaco stadium is probably the least adequate of all our grounds around Australia.
WA Premier Colin Barnett says Mr Demetriou's comments are fair. "Subiaco stadium is not up to the standard of stadiums in other states and what we are looking at now though is the rectangular stadium," he said. "Last week, Rugby WA put forward its pitch for a multi-million-dollar upgrade of Perth Oval to secure the future of Super 14 rugby in Western Australia.
The government has not committed to the project.
