The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) says it will cut water use at Flemington Race Course in half, with the construction of a new desalination plant.

The VRC has received a $5 million Commonwealth grant for the project, which is expected to be up and running by next summer. The plant will tap into a salt water aquifer under the racecourse to cut drinking water consumption and water the tracks, ground and gardens.

The chairman, Rod Fitzroy says work will also be done on improving the centre of the track, using less water and energy.  "When we have this alternate source of water we'll be able to look at ways in which we can green the centre and continue to ensure that Flemington remains one of the great racecourses of the world," he said.
