The former Geelong Golf Club site could house a $20 million state-of-the-art tennis centre and academy under an ambitious plan unveiled yesterday. Whats left of the Geelong Golf Club

The 55-hectare lot in North Geelong would be used for the tennis complex and a giant home-centre store under the plan revealed by owner-developer Links Living Limited.

"We have recently had some very exciting discussions with Tennis Australia, Australia's peak tennis body, and we both see considerable merit in replacing the golf course with a large-scale regional, public tennis complex to service not only Geelong but most of Western Victoria," Links managing director Stephen Head said. "It is an option we are seriously considering." A concept plan for the tennis complex has been prepared and includes 20 floodlit tennis courts, a "show court" with seating for 500 people, a gymnasium and off-street parking.

The complex is estimated to cost more than $20 million.

Links Living is also said to be considering a tennis academy for talented juniors and expects the complex to help "return Australia to its rightful place as a leading tennis nation".

In defence of the tennis centre Mr Head said there were other golf courses in the region but not a "state-of-the-art tennis centre".

Mr Head said the proposed home centre, one of a number to be rolled out by Woolworths and its partner Lowes Inc, still required formal approval.
